Michael A. Tappan
Michael A. Tappan is President and Chief Executive Officer of RSR Russia, founded in 2007 to offer in Russia the director search and corporate governance services of RSR Partners, a firm established in the U.S. in 1993 by Russell S. Reynolds, Jr.
In collaboration with his Russian partners, Mr. Tappan was the pioneer of the executive search business in Russia. In 1993 he founded Ward Howell International in Moscow as the independent affiliate of the U.S. firm of the same name. As Chairman, Mr. Tappan worked with his Russian partners in building the firm from its inception to leadership in the Russian market. He was based in Moscow from 1999 until his retirement from the firm at the end of 2002. He assisted Russian and foreign client companies in virtually all industrial sectors with the recruitment of both Russian and expatriate senior-level executives.
Mr. Tappan originally joined Ward Howell International, Inc. in New York in 1987 as a Partner. He held various management positions in the firm, including Manager of the New York office, Vice Chairman - International, member of the Executive Committee, and member of the Ward Howell International Council.
Mr. Tappan began his career on Wall Street and is a Chartered Financial Analyst. He moved to the executive search consulting business in 1971 by joining Russell Reynolds Associates in New York. In 1977-79, as a Senior Vice President he opened and built the firm's office in Paris and handled search assignments throughout Europe and in North Africa and the Middle East. He speaks conversational French.
Mr. Tappan received a BA degree from Yale University and an MBA from the Harvard Business School. While resident in Moscow, he served as Chairman of the Board of United Way of Moscow and on the Boards of the American Chamber of Commerce in Russia and the American-Russian Young Artists Orchestra. He was a member of the Monolith Club and the Moscow Country Club. He serves currently as a member of the Board of Guardians of United Way Russia, a charitable organization registered in Russia. He is a member of the Independent Directors Association in Moscow, having served on its Advisory Board in 2001-3 while still resident there.
Mr. Tappan returned to the United States in mid-2003 and resides in Maryland not far from Washington, DC. His wife, Irina, and he have three children.
